Soul Sister Quisine was founded in 2002 by Nicole” Soul Sister” Gates. Nicole was born and raised in Brooklyn New York. As a young child Nicole showed a great interest in cooking. Growing up Nicole was surrounded by great cooks of traditional southern style soul food. Nicole watch and learned from her Grandma Laura Bell Gates the cooking style used in Virginia, While Grandma Frankie O Hendrix showed her the smooth techniques use in Georgian cuisine. Nicole gives honors to her Mother Joyce Gates, her Aunt Chelsea Winslow, Aunt Ruby Scott and to all who peeked her interest in cooking.
Nicole Interest in cooking continue all through her youth. Whether it was making Mayonnaise cakes from a recipe in a old southern cookbook with Soul Brother No. 4(Troy Gates), or making Southern Fried Chicken with her best friend Sharon Pitts, Nicole showed the love for cooking. After graduating from Lafayette High School Nicole attended the University of Maryland Baltimore County where she majored in Business Administration. Nicole continue to learn and assist in the preparation of food for family events and holidays. After leaving school Nicole enter the business world in New York.
Nicole excelled in any position that she held while continuing to cook for her friend and family. In 2002 a friend of Nicole’s after tasting one of her delicious traditional meals said “ you need to sell this. It is off the chain”. The seed was planted. Later in that year Nicole was asked to attend a business seminar. The key note speaker was Ervin “Magic” Johnson. After a very motivating speech she decided to bring Soul Sister Quisine Catering to the people of New York.
Nicole continue to prepare meals for her friends and family but also started to build her own style and brand. In 2006 Nicole wanting to improve and expand her general knowledge of all aspect of cooking she attended Kingsborough Community College culinary program. Nicole also received her NYS bartender license. Nicole went on to receive many certifications including, NYC Food Preparation, National Restaurant Association Education Foundation SerSafe, Economic Development Corporation and many more. In 2007 Nicole placed 2nd in the Brooklyn Library Power Up Business Plan Competition. She won $5,000 dollars cash along with a $10,000 in In-Kind Gift
Over the years Nicole has honed her catering skills in such places as CBS Studios, NYC Board of Education, The Brooklyn Public Library, The Women Center for Career Development and many other events. Soul Sister Quisine Catering had a long and successful run at the Red Market in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. In the summer of 2012 Soul Sister Quisine Catering was the exclusive Soul Food vender at the Dekalb Market in Brooklyn, New York. Soul Sister Quisine received many write ups, and Facebook likes including 2 write up on Yelp.
